SIMULACRA
This series involves the transformation of some kind of ordinary thing into a spectacle, using an elaborate video projection arrangement. Through the use of mirrors, and careful video editing, video is projected onto 5 sides of a clay object (all but the bottom). The experience of viewing these in person can involve a kind of dissociation between the awareness of the actual object versus the illusory object. Both awarenesses can exist simultaneously, even though they contradict each other. The work is also intended to question the human tendency to place value on one kind of experience over another -- the placement of these simulations in an art context means that people may allow their attention to be drawn into something that they might usually pass over and reject as unworthy of contemplation.
